STEM Innovators Conference honors nine ʳɫÊÓƵ State students

Research by Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Scholars recognized

Nine Ê³É«ÊÓƵ State students were honored recently for their outstanding research at the STEM Innovators Conference in Savannah. The students are Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Scholars.

There are currently more than 50 LSAMP Scholars at ʳɫÊÓƵ State’s ʳɫÊÓƵ and Marietta campuses. The LSAMP initiative is designed to improve minority participation and success in undergraduate and graduate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs.

With a recent grant from the National Science Foundation, LSAMP Scholars conducted cutting-edge research with top engineers and scientists and presented their work at the STEM Innovators Conference.

Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (Marietta Campus):

1st place – Christopher Roper, Mechanical Engineering/Aerospace

2nd place – Emmanuel Nnamani, Mechanical Engineering

3rd place – Tahir Upshaw, Mechanical Engineering/Aerospace
                   Faculty research mentor: Adeel Khalid

College of Science and Mathematics (ʳɫÊÓƵ Campus):

2nd place – Olamide Awodu, Molecular and Cellular Biology
                   Faculty research mentor: Adrienne King

2nd place – Joan Ndungu, Chemistry
                   Faculty research mentor: Ellen Moomaw

3rd place – Gabriel Kigundu, Molecular and Cellular Biology
                   Faculty research mentor: Susan Smith

3rd place – Stephanie Njau, Microbiology
                   Faculty research mentor: Melanie Griffin

3rd place – Denise Hernandez, David Richmond, Mathematics
