Preferred Name Change
Per the University System of Georgia, institutions may display the individual鈥檚 Preferred First Name on devices or screens, rosters, reports, etc., in/from Systems of Record, provided the Preferred First Name is listed with the person鈥檚 full Legal Name鈥攆or example, Johnathan (John) Smith. The aim is to respect individuals' preferred names while providing consistent identity management standards and reducing the risk of fraud by impersonation.

Students can submit the Preferred Name Change Form through . This online form is located under the Student Records tab. Once approved, your preferred name will appear in parentheses within your legal name. Example: Johnathan (John) Smith. The preferred name is visible within Owl Express, class roster, student profile and DegreeWorks.
Students may update their preferred name until 5:00 PM on the first day of class. Updates are processed three times per year before each semester begins.
Preferred names will not be used in cases requiring a legal name, such as financial aid documents, transcripts, diplomas, payroll records, and federal immigration documents, eCore courses, and proctored exams.
